Winchester

Everyone loves a haunted house. Perhaps not to live in themselves. But seeing other people living in them usually makes for a pretty good movie. Winchester is my kind of scary movie. No gore, just a lot of suspense and some jump scares.

I really enjoyed the fact that this film is “inspired by true events”. Which basically means, the house exists, the characters were real people, but the actual situation in the movie has been fictionalized. In fact, Sarah Winchester did own a sprawling house outside of San Francisco which is, to this day, considered one of the most haunted houses in the world. For decades, this mansion remained under construction 24 hours a day, 7 days a week, and resulted in a house that contains hundreds of rooms and stands 7 stories tall.

Winchester suggests a fantastical explanation as to why the Widow Winchester did this, and it makes for a fun film. If you’re looking for a good way to kill two hours and a lot of popcorn, give this movie a try. Winchester is rated PG-13, and stars Helen Mirren and Jason Clarke.
